SAN DIEGO / WASHINGTON — The U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) is deploying the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) area of responsibility in the Middle East. The movement comes amid intense speculation regarding a potential escalation of American military operations against Iran following the upcoming U.S. midterm elections on November 3.
According to reports from Fox News and the Jerusalem Post, the 13th MEU alongside the Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) centered around the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island quietly departed from San Diego. The deployment follows earlier reports that the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt and its strike group are also heading to the Persian Gulf, where they are expected to arrive in late November to relieve the USS George Washington.
Strategic “Options” or Routine Rotation?
Military analysts and media reports suggest the deployment is intended to provide U.S. President Donald Trump with “more options” against Iran. The 13th MEU could serve as a replacement for the 11th MEU and the USS Boxer ARG, which were pre-emptively deployed to the Gulf region in March following the outbreak of the war with Iran.
The build-up occurs against a backdrop of domestic and international political pressures:
- Political Speculation: Speculation about renewed ground operations or airstrikes has been fueled by the U.S. Army’s recent release of an Iranian soldier identification poster. However, official sources note that such materials are routine, and the current naval movement may simply be a standard force rotation.
- Domestic Opposition: The conflict remains highly unpopular with American voters due to surging gasoline prices caused by disruptions to oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz. Recent polls rank the conflict as a major concern, trailing just behind economic issues.
- Israeli Pressure: Reports indicate Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—who faces his own domestic election on October 27—has pushed for immediate joint strikes against Iran.
Force Composition
The 13th MEU is a standard Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF) consisting of approximately 2,000 personnel. The deployment includes:
- Ground Element: Battalion Landing Team 2/4
- Aviation Element: Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 364 (Reinforced) and Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 211
- Logistics Element: Combat Logistics Battalion 13
- Naval Support: USS Makin Island, accompanied by San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ships USS Anchorage and USS John P. Murtha.
Ground capabilities in the region are further reinforced by a Brigade Combat Team from the 82nd Airborne Division, whose deployment was recently extended to a full year.
